Dry Needling/Electro Dry Needling (EDN)

Dry needling or electro dry needling involves the insertion of small filament type needles into myofascial trigger points (known as painful knots in the muscles), tendons, ligaments, or near bones or nerves to stimulate a healing response. Dry needling is a modern, science-based intervention for treatment of neuromusculoskeletal conditions throughout the body.

Dry needling is not Acupuncture. Dry needling is based on Western medical research and principles, whereas acupuncture is based on Traditional Chinese Medicine aiming to alter the flow of energy (“Qi”). Dry needling needles are placed based on anatomy compared to Acupuncture needles typically placed along meridians/channels for the treatment of diseases.

Spine and extremity adjustments/manipulation (SMT/EMT)

Spinal Manipulative Therapy (SMT)/Spinal “adjustments”, as they are commonly referred to as, are performed to help reduce pain, improve motion, increase muscle strength, and improve return to normal activities. Pittsburgh Osteopractic uses a variety of techniques and positions depending on your specific needs which are safe and effective.

Cupping

Cupping is an approach to soft tissue mobilization which differs from other forms by providing an upward force. Cupping creates a decompressive force to skin, tissue, and muscles as compared to a compressive or translatory force in massage. Cupping can be performed static where cups are left in place for a specific time or dynamic where cups can be moved around on your skin, or you can move in a specific way while the cups are in place.

Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (IASTM)

IASTM is a soft-tissue treatment technique that uses tools made of plastic or metal to perform targeted massage and mobilization. This technique is often used to treat conditions such as muscle strains, ligament sprains, tendinopathies, and break down scar tissue adhesions.
